She slipped and fell from the second level on the evening of July 2. The next day, we found her on the grass close to our office building. The vet told us that her chest bone was dislocated. Our poor girl!
Last week, she saw the vet three times for injections, and another once for constipation.
Before last weekend, she stopped eating and drinking. The vet claimed there was a shadow on her lung. Our poor girl is suffering both mentally and physically.
Right now, she's given daily intravenous drops to keep her alive. Yet she has no intention of eating. For her health, we have no choice but to make her.
Can somebody offer us a tip or a recommendation? Please send it to grace@happyandpolly.com if you have any. It's really heartbreaking to see her unhappy face every day.
We will keep you updated shortly. Thank you.
]]>We invited cat moms and dads to share moments with their cats, we received tons pictures and videos on Instagram, Twitter and our pet lover club in 8 days. Although the winners were picked by app randomly, we were still thrilled by the support and passion.
Cats don't talk. Guess we all thought about whether they love us. You know what? A picture or video can tell. The signs of their behavior reveal how much they LOVE you.
Here we would thank the effort from all cat moms and dads who joined us. We have also select several moments and stories from this campaign. Hope you will like them as we do.

This is me and my precious girl Marmalade or Marmie for short. She was turned out onto the street after her initial owner passed away when she was still a kitten. She got pregnant and was rescued shortly after giving birth to seven kittens. She was malnourished with her ribs showing but she still managed to produce enough milk for all of her kittens. We like to call her our forever kitten because she’s very small and the vet says her growth was likely stunted due to pregnancy and malnutrition. Since coming home she’s been so friendly, snuggly, sweet, and loyal. #happytimewithcat Happy & Polly Pet Lover Club!@Keira Wright
This is my boy Orion! I adopted him in 2011 and he’s a healthy, happy 11 years old now.
Things I love about him are: his old man way of sitting, playing tag and running down the hall with him, and his absolute hatred of people but even bigger hatred of being alone so he begrudgingly graces us with his presence
He’s getting older and his eyesight is deteriorating but he’s still as cuddly and loveable as ever!

I got my cat, Juniper, on the worst day of my life.
I woke up to the most painful phone call from my dad who told me my grandma had passed away. She wasn’t your average grandma. She was my role model. She was so vibrant and made friends with strangers everywhere she went. She was just pure love.
Juniper was brought to the vet clinic I work at that same morning, she had been found in the middle of the road and was rescued.
Being total devastated about my grandma, I was not going to pass up the opportunity to bottle feed a little kitten and comfort myself. I loved her instantly. She was so independent and refused bottles, only wanted to do it herself. She came to my work with me for the first couple of weeks so I could keep an eye on her. My manger found me in the middle of my shift one day and told me something had happened to Juniper. I rushed to her to find her pale, unresponsive, and covered in vomit. To say I was devastated was an understatement. I couldn’t bare to think about losing her, not so soon, not right after my my grandma.
The doctors diagnosed her with panleukopenia, aka feline distemper or cat parvo. She was only a few weeks old at the time so the odds of her surviving it were weak at best. I was asked to make a choice by the end of the day. I could give her a fighting chance or end it before the disease took her. I was overwhelmed and highly emotionally. I thought about my Grandma who was always very sick as a child and was told she would be lucky to make it past age 12. I wanted desperately for her to make it, so I asked for a fighting chance. After some fluids and constant monitoring, the doctors said she made a complete turn around. She perked right up and they gave me the go ahead to take her home under close supervision.
A few months later and she has made a complete recovery. She is vibrant, thriving, and absolutely spoiled. She’s just as fiery and loving my grandma was. She was truly a gift given to me at the lowest point in my life. Every moment has been a #happytimewithcat since.

Patients with coronavirus may have mild or no symptoms and still be spreading it. They have no fevers, no cough. You could be unknowingly, unwittingly, unintentionally spreading this.
To add to this it’s believed the coronavirus is more contagious than seasonal flu. Any method of disrupting the cycle of infection is worthy of our attention.
Scientists in London who’ve had success in detecting malaria have an unlikely method they think could be used in preventing the spread of COVID-19. When you have an infection your body odor, the smells coming from your body, change, which is detectable by mosquitoes.
So mosquitoes find you more attractive when you have a malaria infection. Researchers wondered whether dogs could do the same.
How Does The Training work?
Dogs have got an incredible sense of smell, they've got a very sensitive nose. But they are also able to learn and they can learn smells. So by combining the two, researchers were able to train dogs to be able to detect the smell.
Source: Medical Detection Dogs
The “COVID Dog Team” consists of six dogs, including:
- 3 Cocker Spaniels
- 1 Labrador
- 1 Labradoodle
- 1 lab/Golden Retriever mix
The first phase involves collecting samples of patients infected with the new coronavirus in London hospitals. Then, the dog will be trained to recognize smells.
The estimated training time is 6 to 8 weeks. If this test is successful, the first batch of dogs may be beaten at a British airport within six months. Use reward-based methods and clicker training to train dogs. When the dog correctly recognizes the sample, he will be rewarded.
According to Dr. Claire Guest,
“The samples that the dogs will be trained on at the center will be deactivated (dead) virus and therefore of no risk to the dogs or handlers. When sniffing people the dogs will not need to make contact but will sniff the air around a person. The dogs will therefore not be in direct contact with the people screened to prevent the risk of spreading the virus.”
One of the main benefits of it would be that we can rapidly find people who have an infection but don't have any symptoms. So normally we screen people for malaria when they present with the symptoms of malaria and find out if they have it.
What dogs would be able to do with odors is to find people who are showing no symptoms. So those are the people who will carry on a cycle of infection. This is in its very early stages, do you have a time frame?
There are also other people who worry about the dogs. These dogs may help with the re-spread of coronavirus happening as they can smell for the virus. There is a lot of sort of operational issues that we have to address before we can confidently put those dogs into action in an airport, at schools, wherever it might be.

]]>While the main spreader of COVID-19 is human to human transmission, there are cases of pets that got infected with this coronavirus around the world, including the US.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the first dog got tested positive for COVID-19 in New York. And its owner is also an infected human patient. There are other animals also teased positive for the disease between April 24 and July 1, including a lion, tiger, two cats, and three dogs. Most of them were in New York.
On July 8, 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a tweet that confirms Pets Can Get COVID-19 In some situations.
According to the CDC, the causing virus of COVID-19 is called SARS-CoV-2. Cats and dogs can be infected with this virus, as well as a few other types of animals. But not all of them have been tested. Here is the list of confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 in Animals in the United States if you would like to know.
>> Full List
CDC, USDA, and other organizations are still conducting active surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in pets. To test these pets for SARS-CoV-2 infection, and see whether they develop antibodies to this virus can help us better know the infection of pets and the role of animals in the spread of COVID-19.
But both CDC and USDA consider that the risk of pets spreading COVID-19 to people is quite low. Data show some infected pets might spread the virus to their same species more easily than other species. And these data were based on a small number of animals, and do not indicate whether animals can spread it to people.
According to the CDC, there is a small chance that Pets can get affected by humans, we should take some actions to protect these family members from possible infection.
1) Limit pets’ Interaction with other animals and people
Don’t let your pets wandering outside the household alone; especially avoid public crowds where there are lots of people. Keep them indoors if possible.
If you need to walk your dog outside, make sure they are on a leash, and keep the distance for at least 2 meters away from others.
2) Keep up good hygiene
We don’t know for sure how this virus spreads; we should keep up good hygiene with our pets too. You should also wash your hands before touching their supplies, such as bowls, toys, and beds, etc.
You may also want to put on masks on pets, but officials say this is not really feasible, and it might hurt your pet. And don’t wash your pet with chemical products such as disinfectants and alcohol.
3) Protect pets if you are sick
If you are confirmed to have been affected with COVID-19, isolate yourself from other people, and pets, including your pets, and other animals.
Your pets should also be isolated and kept indoors. If possible, you can have your friend to take care of them when you are sick.
If you have to take care of them by yourself, you should not interact with them closely, such as pet, kiss or share food with them.
You should always wear masks when caring for them, and wash your hands before and after interacting. You can also call your vet for telemedicine consultations. They will offer your suggestion for their treatment.
Although some animals have been confirmed to be infected and may get sick, but none of them have died. You should not abandon them for being affected. What should you do then?
1) Consult a Vet
If your pet is confirmed infection, you should first isolate the pet, and call your vet. If you are also affected by the disease, don’t go to the clinic yourself. Call your vet first, and tell them the situation.
2) Isolate your Pet
You should provide a separate room or space for your pet. A private yard will be better for your dog to stay. Cats should be kept indoors.
You should also clean up after your pet and their supplies with gloves on. Remember to wash your hands before and after cleaning.
3) Keep up with their symptoms
If your pets are isolated at home, you should always pay attention to their symptoms. Common symptoms include fever, coughing, breathing difficulty, lethargy, sneezing, running nose, vomiting, eyes discharge, and diarrhea, etc.
If there is any new symptom, or their symptoms get worse, such as breathing with trouble, you should call your vet immediately. Take advice from your vet over the phone, or when possible, take your pet to your vet for better treatment.
4) Protect yourself
If you have to take care of your sick pet, you should also protect yourself. You should always wear masks and gloves while interacting with them, clean your hands with soap after taking care of them and their supplies. You should also clean up the whole house and then disinfect it.
When all their signs go away, and the vet says it is ok to end home isolation, you can get your pet back to their familiar places.
Hope this can help you protect you and your pet. If you enjoyed it and would like to see more news, do not hesitate to visit Happy & Polly website on https://happyandpolly.com.
]]>Dog Age Research
The research was done by scientists of the University of California San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine. They worked with genome experts to devise a more accurate formula to calculate a dog’s age. This formula is based on the chemical changes in the DNA.
To learn more about dogs’ aging process, scientists gathered and analyzed blood samples of 105 Labrador retrievers, with different ages from a few weeks to 16 years old. They sequenced the genomes of the Labradors to tune “DNA methylation”, which is a process that many species undergo as they age.
They also developed a new molecular tool called the “epigenetic clock”. Using this tool, they can drill into the rate of molecular changes in dog’s DNA to learn the patterns of change in chemical markers on the DNA of aging.
According to the research, during the course of life, human and dog DNA doesn't change much, but chemical marks on the DNA do. We learn from one researcher of this team that the epigenetic changes provide clues to a genome’s age – similar to wrinkles on a person’s face which provides clues to their age.
How to Calculate Dog Years?
Although dogs share the same environment as human beings and also follow similar developmental trajectories, scientists found that on a molecular level, their aging is much more complicated. In dogs' first year of life, Canine epigenetic clock ticks much faster than the human one. But as years pass, the clock rate slows down later in life.
According to this study, the equation to calculate a dog’s age in human years is: A dog's human age = 16 * ln(age in dog years) + 31, which means you multiply the natural log of a dog's age by 16, then add 31.
If you don’t understand the equation, you can refer to the below graph depicting the new aging formula for dogs.
From the above equation and graph, we can learn that: age of an 8-week-old puppy = that of a 9-month-old baby. However, a 1-year old puppy is like a 30-year old human, while a 4-year old dog is similar to a 52-year-old human. They are really much older than we thought they were.
However, these data were only based on Labrador retrievers. Though dogs live about 12 years on the average, some breeds may live longer. More tests on other breeds will be needed to prove this clock applies to all breeds.
We hope this article can help you better learn your dog. If you enjoyed it and would like to see more news, do not hesitate to visit Happy & Polly website on https://happyandpolly.com.
]]>The average consumption in step with capita in value terms reached 16.34 USD in step with capita (in retail prices) in 2014. In the next five years, it grew at a CAGR of 4.48% in step with annum. In the medium term (by 2024), the indicator is forecast to sluggish down its boom and growth at a CAGR of 3.64% per annum.
North America turned into the largest location in the global pet grocery store, accounting for 38% of the marketplace in 2019. Western Europe become the second largest region accounting for 22% of the worldwide pet grocery store. Middle East turned into the smallest vicinity within the international pet grocery store.
In January 2014, Merck & Co. announced that the company will not use chimpanzees for research, joining over 20 pharmaceutical companies and contract laboratories that have made the commitment. As the trend continues, it is estimated the remaining non-government owned 1,000 chimpanzees will be retired to sanctuaries around 2020.
The growing humanization of pets is enabling pet food producers to provide premium merchandise targeted toward pet proprietors. Humanization of pets means that pet owners deal with pets like members in their family, and thus they may be an increasing number of buying top class and super-top rate ingredients and complex snacks and treats for pets. Premium pet ingredients are natural, organic, have higher great and are safer than normal pet ingredients. In 2016, approximately 14% of pet food launches inside the USA were located as indulgent or top rate.
One of the leading developments on the worldwide pet grocery store is attached with the growing humanization of pet meals. In the last few years, many manufacturers have been putting more focus on smooth label, herbal components and top class quality. As the space between human and pet meals is narrowing, pet meals producers are increasingly more following human tastes and nutritional demands. Ultimately, this drives demand for top class components in pet meals and a preference for domestically sourced and traceable materials.
Another dominating trend, impacting the pet grocery store is the growing demand for healthful pet foods with proactive ingredients. The marketplace is seeing a surge within the range and sort of pet meals picks highlighting the inclusion of nutraceutical elements which include probiotics, omega-three fatty acids, nutrients and more. Meanwhile, the hobby in new protein assets is also gaining traction. Although the bulk of protein assets today are still meat-based, some of the pet meals producers have been looking into new protein sources and ingredients. Pet food manufacturers had been additionally adding nutrient-dense superfoods, along with chia, kelp, broccoli, kale, amongst others, in their products.
Despite this, pet food, as a basic daily requirement for the survival of pets, did not appear to have regulations related to the cut off of transportation and the cessation of imports and exports with the severity of overseas epidemics. For example, Amazon has suspended the delivery of non-essential items to warehouses in the United States and the United Kingdom, but pet supplies are defined by Amazon as basic products that can continue to be transported; the business premises in Belgium will be closed by April 5th. Enter the blocked state.
However, food stores, pet stores, pharmacies, post offices, bookstores, banks and gas stations can also operate to meet the urgent needs of the people. Although the epidemic has a certain impact on the global pet trade, it also provides a good opportunity for the rise of domestic pet brands.
